Official Description

Radiologic examination, complex motion (ie, hypercycloidal) body section (eg, mastoid polytomography), other than with urography; bilateral

Common Language Description

A radiologic examination that focuses on complex motion of a specific body section is conducted using advanced imaging technology. This procedure employs a machine equipped with multiple scanning heads, which allows for the imaging of several predetermined planes in rapid succession. This technique is particularly beneficial as it minimizes distortion that may arise from internal movement during the imaging process. The result is a detailed digital three-dimensional image of the targeted body section. Such examinations are instrumental in diagnosing a variety of articular disorders, which may include conditions like ankylosis, congenital or developmental disorders, fractures, joint dislocations, inflammatory disorders, and osteoarthritis. Additionally, this imaging technique is valuable for assessing masticatory muscle disorders, which encompass issues such as myofascial pain, myofibrotic contractures, myospasm, and neoplasia. It is important to note that CPT® Code 76101 is designated for unilateral radiologic examinations, while CPT® Code 76102 specifically pertains to bilateral radiologic examinations of complex motion, explicitly excluding urography.

1. Indications

The radiologic examination coded as CPT® 76102 is indicated for a variety of conditions that affect the body section being examined. These indications include:

  • Articular Disorders These may include conditions such as ankylosis, which is the abnormal stiffening and immobility of a joint due to fusion of the bones; congenital or developmental disorders that affect joint structure and function; fractures that may compromise joint integrity; joint dislocations that can lead to instability; inflammatory disorders that cause pain and swelling in the joints; and osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease characterized by the breakdown of cartilage.
  • Masticatory Muscle Disorders This includes conditions affecting the muscles involved in chewing, such as myofascial pain, which is pain in the muscles and fascia; myofibrotic contractures, which are abnormal shortening of muscle fibers; myospasm, which refers to involuntary muscle contractions; and neoplasia, which is the presence of abnormal tissue growth that may be benign or malignant.

2. Procedure

The procedure for CPT® 76102 involves several key steps that ensure accurate imaging of the body section in question. These steps include:

  • Preparation of the Patient The patient is positioned appropriately to allow for optimal imaging of the targeted body section. This may involve adjusting the patient's posture and ensuring that they remain still during the examination to prevent motion artifacts.
  • Calibration of the Imaging Equipment The radiologic equipment is calibrated to ensure that it is functioning correctly and is set to the appropriate parameters for the examination. This includes selecting the correct scanning mode and adjusting settings based on the specific body section being examined.
  • Execution of the Imaging Procedure The imaging machine, equipped with multiple scanning heads, is activated to perform the examination. It captures images of several predetermined planes in rapid succession, which allows for the creation of a detailed three-dimensional representation of the body section. This process is designed to eliminate distortion caused by any internal movement.
  • Post-Processing of Images After the imaging is completed, the captured data is processed to generate the final digital images. These images are then reviewed for clarity and detail, ensuring that they meet the necessary diagnostic standards.

3. Post-Procedure

Following the completion of the radiologic examination coded as CPT® 76102, the patient may be monitored briefly to ensure there are no immediate adverse effects from the procedure. The images obtained will be analyzed by a qualified radiologist or physician, who will interpret the findings and provide a report detailing any abnormalities or conditions identified. The results of this examination can be critical in guiding further diagnostic or therapeutic interventions. Patients may be advised on any necessary follow-up appointments or additional imaging studies based on the findings of the examination.
