The procedure described by CPT® Code 0355T involves gastrointestinal tract imaging using an intraluminal device, specifically a capsule endoscopy. This innovative technique utilizes a small, disposable capsule that contains an endoscope equipped with a camera. The complete system also includes sensing and transmission devices, along with a data recorder that captures the images taken during the procedure. Intraluminal imaging is particularly valuable for examining the colon, especially in cases where traditional colonoscopy methods have failed due to various challenges such as technical impossibility, incomplete fecal evacuation, or issues with bowel preparation. During the procedure, the patient swallows the capsule, which then travels through the gastrointestinal tract propelled by natural peristaltic movements. As the capsule moves, it captures images of the colon at two-second intervals. These images are wirelessly transmitted to a recorder that the patient wears around their waist. After the imaging process is complete, which typically occurs within approximately 24 hours, the collected data is downloaded to a workstation computer for thorough interpretation. A detailed written report of the findings is then generated, providing essential insights into the condition of the colon, including the detection of polyps and tumors.

The procedure is indicated for the following conditions:
The procedure consists of several key steps that ensure effective imaging of the colon:
After the capsule endoscopy, patients are typically advised to resume their normal activities. They may be instructed to monitor for any unusual symptoms, such as abdominal pain or discomfort, and to report these to their healthcare provider. The capsule is expected to be expelled naturally within a day, and patients should be informed that they may not see the capsule as it passes through their system. The results of the imaging will be compiled into a report, which will be discussed with the patient during a follow-up appointment to determine any necessary next steps based on the findings.
