Cholera vaccine, live, adult dosage, 1 dose schedule, for oral use

Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 90625 refers to the cholera vaccine, which is a live vaccine specifically formulated for adult dosage and administered in a one-dose schedule for oral use. Vaccines, unlike immune globulins that offer short-term, passive immunity, provide active, long-term immunity. This is achieved by introducing altered versions of specific pathogens, such as viruses or bacteria, into the recipient's immune system. The immune system then responds by producing its own antibodies against these invaders, creating a memory that enables the body to respond more effectively upon future exposures to the same antigens. The cholera vaccine is designed to protect against cholera, an acute diarrheal disease caused by the bacterium Vibrio cholerae. While cholera is not commonly found in industrialized nations, it remains prevalent in regions such as sub-Saharan Africa and the Indian subcontinent. The disease can lead to severe dehydration, cramping, and shock, potentially resulting in death within hours if not treated promptly. It is important to note that this code specifically reports the vaccine product used, rather than any associated services or administration details.

1. Indications

The cholera vaccine (CPT® Code 90625) is indicated for individuals who are at risk of exposure to cholera, particularly in areas where the disease is endemic. The following conditions and situations warrant the administration of this vaccine:

  • Travel to Endemic Regions Individuals planning to travel to sub-Saharan Africa or the Indian subcontinent, where cholera outbreaks are more common, should receive this vaccine to reduce their risk of infection.
  • Occupational Exposure Healthcare workers, humanitarian aid workers, or others who may be working in environments with a high risk of cholera transmission are advised to be vaccinated.
  • Outbreak Response During cholera outbreaks, vaccination may be recommended for populations in affected areas to help control the spread of the disease.

2. Procedure

The administration of the cholera vaccine involves the following procedural steps:

  • Step 1: Patient Assessment Prior to vaccination, a thorough assessment of the patient’s medical history and potential contraindications is conducted. This includes evaluating any previous allergic reactions to vaccines or components of the cholera vaccine.
  • Step 2: Preparation of the Vaccine The vaccine is prepared according to the manufacturer's instructions. This may involve reconstitution if the vaccine is supplied in a powdered form, ensuring that it is mixed with the appropriate diluent to achieve the correct dosage.
  • Step 3: Administration The vaccine is administered orally, typically in a single dose. The patient is instructed to consume the vaccine in its entirety, which may be provided in a liquid form or as a capsule, depending on the specific product used.
  • Step 4: Post-Administration Monitoring After administration, the patient is monitored for a short period to observe for any immediate adverse reactions. This is a standard precaution to ensure patient safety.

3. Post-Procedure

Following the administration of the cholera vaccine, patients are advised to maintain hydration and monitor for any side effects, which may include mild gastrointestinal symptoms. It is important for patients to understand that while the vaccine provides protection against cholera, it does not guarantee complete immunity. Therefore, continued adherence to safe food and water practices is recommended, especially when traveling to areas where cholera is prevalent. Patients should also be informed about the signs and symptoms of cholera and advised to seek medical attention if they experience severe diarrhea or vomiting.
