Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 90710 refers to the Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella vaccine (MMRV), which is a live vaccine administered subcutaneously. Vaccines, unlike immune globulins that provide short-term, passive immunity, are designed to provide active, long-term immunity. This is achieved by exposing the recipient's immune system to altered versions of specific viruses or bacteria, prompting the immune system to produce its own antibodies against these pathogens. The immune system retains a memory of how to produce these antibodies, allowing for a quicker and more effective response upon subsequent exposures to the same antigens. The MMRV vaccine contains live, attenuated viruses, meaning that the viruses have been weakened to the point where they can stimulate an immune response without causing the actual diseases. This vaccine is crucial in preventing measles, mumps, rubella, and varicella (chickenpox), which are all serious infectious diseases. The code 90710 specifically denotes the combination of these four live virus vaccines, distinguishing it from other related vaccines, such as the MMR vaccine, which only includes measles, mumps, and rubella. It is important to note that these codes are used solely to report the vaccine product administered.

1. Indications

The Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella vaccine (MMRV) is indicated for the prevention of the following infectious diseases:

  • Measles - A highly contagious viral disease characterized by fever, cough, runny nose, and a distinctive rash.
  • Mumps - A viral infection that primarily affects the salivary glands, leading to swelling, fever, and pain.
  • Rubella - Also known as German measles, this viral infection can cause mild symptoms but is particularly dangerous during pregnancy as it can lead to serious birth defects.
  • Varicella - Commonly known as chickenpox, this is a highly contagious disease that causes an itchy rash and flu-like symptoms.

2. Procedure

The administration of the MMRV vaccine involves several key procedural steps to ensure safety and efficacy:

  • Step 1: Preparation - Prior to administration, the healthcare provider must verify the patient's vaccination history and assess for any contraindications to the vaccine. The vaccine should be stored according to manufacturer guidelines and allowed to reach room temperature before use.
  • Step 2: Site Selection - The vaccine is administered subcutaneously, typically in the outer aspect of the upper arm or the thigh for infants. The site should be cleaned with an appropriate antiseptic to minimize the risk of infection.
  • Step 3: Administration - Using a sterile syringe and needle, the healthcare provider will inject the vaccine into the subcutaneous tissue. Care should be taken to ensure that the vaccine is administered correctly to achieve optimal immune response.
  • Step 4: Post-Administration Observation - After administration, the patient should be monitored for a short period to observe for any immediate adverse reactions, such as allergic responses. This is typically done for 15-30 minutes.

3. Post-Procedure

Following the administration of the MMRV vaccine, patients may experience mild side effects, which can include soreness at the injection site, low-grade fever, or a mild rash. These reactions are generally self-limiting and resolve within a few days. It is important for healthcare providers to inform patients or guardians about potential side effects and the importance of reporting any unusual or severe reactions. Additionally, patients should be advised to maintain a record of the vaccination for future reference and to ensure that they are up to date with their immunization schedule.
